Mrs. Burks dedicated more than 30 years of distinguished service to the Clarke County School District, where she served as a classroom teacher, counselor, and Guidance Department Director. One of the defining moments of Mrs. Burks’ career came in 1966, when she became one of the first African American educators assigned to teach at a formerly all-white school as Clarke County began the process of faculty desegregation. After earning advanced degrees in counseling from the University of Georgia, Mrs. Burks returned to continue serving her community. In 1976, she was appointed Director of the Clarke Middle School Guidance Department, where her leadership helped establish the program as a respected model of excellence.
